Signs your switchboard needs attention
What customers usually notice first.
Ceramic fuses
Old rewireable fuses instead of circuit breakers: a sign the board was installed decades ago.Few or no safety switches
Every circuit supplying power points and lights should be protected by a safety switch (RCD).Frequent tripping or blown fuses
Especially when the kettle, air conditioning or oven comes on: the board may not suit your load.Heat, buzzing or scorch marks
Warmth, a burning smell or discolouring at the board is urgent: call us.No room for new circuits
Renovating, or adding air conditioning, an induction cooktop, solar or a battery, and the board is full.Selling or renting
WA rules require safety switches on power and lighting circuits before a sale settles and in rental homes.
Why upgrade an older switchboard
Safety switches protect people. A safety switch (residual current device, or RCD) cuts the power within a fraction of a second when it detects current leaking to earth, the kind of fault that causes electric shocks. Older boards often have none, or only one.
RCBOs protect each circuit on its own. An RCBO combines a safety switch and a circuit breaker for a single circuit, so a fault on one circuit doesn't turn off the rest of the property.
Capacity for how you live now. Air conditioning, induction cooking, home offices, solar and batteries add circuits and load that older boards weren't designed for.

What an upgrade involves
The usual steps. We'll walk you through yours when we quote.
Step 1: Look and quote
We inspect the board, the circuits and your plans (air conditioning, solar, a renovation), then quote the work.Step 2: Plan the power-off
The property's power is off while the board is replaced. We'll agree the time with you in advance.Step 3: Replace the board
A new switchboard with circuit breakers and safety switch (RCD or RCBO) protection, with every circuit labelled.Step 4: Test and certify
Every circuit and safety switch is tested. WA rules require an Electrical Safety Certificate for this work, and you receive one.

Older boards and asbestos
Many switchboards and meter boards installed before 1990 were mounted on backing panels that can contain asbestos. Drilling, cutting or sanding them can release fibres, so please don't work on an old panel yourself.
We check the panel when we quote. If it may contain asbestos, we'll explain how it will be handled and replaced safely before any work starts.
Our team is trained in the removal of asbestos backing panels from switchboards. Where a panel requires removal, we remove the complete panel, double-bag it using approved asbestos bags and dispose of it appropriately.

Switchboard upgrade FAQs
Do I need safety switches to sell or rent my home in WA?
Yes. Before a sale settles, safety switches (RCDs) must protect all circuits supplying power points and lights: at least two, and more may be needed. Landlords must also have RCDs installed in rental homes, and faulty RCDs must be replaced straight away.

How often should I test my safety switches?
Press each safety switch's test ("T") button every three months, or as often as the manufacturer says if that's more frequent. If it doesn't trip straight away, or won't stay on after you reset it, call a licensed electrical contractor.
How long will the power be off?
It depends on the size of the board and what's being changed. We'll tell you the expected power-off time when we quote and agree the day with you.
Do you install switchboards for solar, batteries and EV chargers?
We plan the board around what you're adding, so there's room and protection for the new circuits. EV charger installations are launching soon: book now to register your interest.
Can you give me a price on the phone?
Every board is different, so we quote after we've seen it. Book online and our local Perth team will call you back within the hour to arrange a time.
